Plant a Native Tree

€50.00

To do our part in protecting and reviving local flora and fauna in the Western Ghats where we are located, we are planting as many local trees and plants at Yoga Vana Farm as possible and encourage our students, guests and other practitioners to support this project and leave a beautiful legacy for our future generations.

By planting native trees and shrubs, we are sustaining and rebuilding the soil and also increasing biodiversity, giving a home to insects, bees and birds.

From your contribution, we will plant native trees (neem, mango, jackfruit, cannonball, etc.) and flowering trees (hibiscus, jasmine, bougainvillea, night jasmine, champaka, henna, plumeria, etc.) at Yoga Vana Farm 🌺 🥭 🐝

Forest ecosystems are important for the survival of humans, because they are massive carbon sinks. Stretching 1,600 kilometers along India’s western coast from the state of Tamil Nadu at the subcontinent’s Southern tip north to Maharashtra, the Western Ghats mountain range is considered one of the most biodiverse places in the world and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The range is home to thousands of different plants and animals, and is also host to a high level of endemism – meaning that many of species that live there are found nowhere else.

But development pressure has led to the loss of large areas of forest within and around the range and these forests are now replaced by sprawling tea estates, coffee plantations and exotic tree plantations. In complete ignorance of the local ecology, India’s erstwhile colonisers planted vast tracts of grasslands with trees meant to yield timber, putting over 150 local flora and fauna species in a precarious position today. Along with the loss of forest habitat, plants and animals are also disappearing. The land use and land cover changes like clearing of forests for plantations, agriculture and mining, etc in the Western Ghats are threatening the process of carbon sequestration.
